DR. FREYA DOWNEY'S PRIVATE VIOLA STUDIO
Teaching viola students of any age joy and balance in practice.
I bring my experience as an active concert violist into every lesson — the same attention to tone, musicality, creativity, and authenticity that I pursue on stage is what I cultivate in my students. My studio is a place for serious, curious musicians who are ready to grow.

Teaching Philosophy
My comprehensive approach to teaching integrates music theory, history, improvisation, repertoire studies, and nonviolent communication skills while tailoring each lesson to the individual students' needs, goals, and desires. I believe that virtuosity is the ability to make music with anyone, and I ensure that all my students, even those who specialize in one playing style, can play any genre of music. By teaching coordination techniques and mindful, time-effective practice habits, I help my students become skilled musicians and lifelong learners who can adapt to any musical situation.
Music is a unique oral tradition we get to be a part of. One of my greatest joys is passing what I have learned from my teachers to the next generations of musicians. This joy drives me to teach and share my love for music.
